Dena Bank cash in on Denzil’s late equaliser


 

Striker Denzil Mascarenhas was instrumental in helping Dena Bank shock Western Railway 6-5 via the penalty shootout tie-breaker in a first round match of the 111th RCF-Nadkarni Cup knockout football tournament, organized by RCF Sports Club under the aegis of MDFA. Mascarenhas struck a late equaliser and then successfully scored in the tie-breaker as Dena Bank rallied to defeat the railway outfit, after the scores were locked 1-all at the end of regulation period, at the RCF Colony ground, Chembur on Wednesday.

 

In another first round match, Indian Navy had smooth sailing as they cruised to a fluent 2-0 win against Kenkre FC, with both goals coming in the first half.

 

Aman Solanki, Anees Pathan, Kashif Pathan and Anas Khan were the others who scored for the bankers in the tie-breaker. Western had taken the lead through Anil Pawar’s goal in the 29th minute. In the penalty shootout, they could only convert four of their five kicks through Merwin Stephen, Linekar Machado, Somnath Mondal and Avinash Dabodia.

 

Results – 1st round: Indian Navy 3 (Anoop Pauly 14th, Bibake Thapa 45th) beat Kenkre FC 0.

 

Dena Bank 6 (Denzil Mascarenhas 85th; TB – Aman Solanki, Anees Pathan, Kashif Pathan, Mascarenhas, Anas Khan) beat Western Railway 5 (Anil pawar 29th; TB – Merwin Stephen, Linekar Machado, Somnath Mondal, Avinash Dabodia) via the tie-breaker. Full time 1-1.

 

Elite Div: ONGC 3 (Himanshu Patil 32nd, Enock C 70th, 78th) beat Mumbai Customs 1 (Sajjad Alam 60th).
