Goan Sports romp to thrilling victory


A charged up Goan Sports Association (GSA) got the better of Central Railway Mumbai Division (CRMD) by an 11-6 margin, in a high-scoring 17-goal thriller in the First Division encounter of the MHAL (Mumbai Hockey Association Limited) League 2016-2017 and played at the MHAL-Mahindra Stadium, Churchgate on Thursday evening. GSA led 5-1 at the break.

Centre forward Ashok Kumar played a stellar role with four goals for the Goan outfit, who, enjoyed more of ball possession and created the better goal-scoring opportunities. Ashok Kumar received good support from teammates Nitin R. and Lalit S., both scoring a brace of goals each and with N. Kumar, Kuldeep Singh and A. Kumar, all chipping with one apiece.

The railway side, who, produced a good fighting display and tried their best to keep pace with the Goans, managed to score through Harbhari Singh who hit the target three times and one each from Bhasvaraj S.A., Rajender Yadav and Tausif Khan.

Meanwhile in the Hockey India’s ‘Olympic Day’ celebration event, Western Railway defeated Central Railway 8-1 in the first women’s match while Guru Nanak High School and MHAL Colts XI played out a 1-1 draw.

In men’s action, Central Railway prevailed over Union Bank of India 3-1 and Greater Mumbai Police tamed CRMD 6-3.
