‘Hunterrr’ – Neither a comedy, nor an art film

As you sow, so shall you reap. During your childhood, if you implant the thoughts of sex all the time, it reflects in your personality, when your grow older. New Hindi film ‘Hunterrr’ produced by Anurag kashyap and five others and written & directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni , deals with one such character Mandar Ponkshe(Gulshan Devaiya). Coming from a middle class family, Mandar is attracted towards girls, since his childhood. When attends college, he becomes more sex addicted, following girls at every place. Soon, he learns the technique of impressing the girls and then making advances to have sex with them.Hunterrr

When he is nearing 40, he has already scored a century, without getting married. So, Mandar’s sex journey spanning over 25 years, has been shown in this film, through present times, immediate past and distant past during 90s, while he was a teenager. So, we find him enjoying his naughty sex with a college girl Parul( Veera Saxena)  , a married woman in the neighborhood Jyotsna ( Sai Tamhankar) and his favourite past time, so called  Savita Bhabi . But, he does face bitter experiences, when he fails in his mission. One such embarrassment is caused, when  he fails to recognize his family’s visiting  guest Shobha (Rachel D’Souza) and attempts to have sex with her.

Finally, he meets a smart well to do working woman Trupti( Radhika Apte), who becomes friendly with him; but dosen’t concede to his demand of marriage.  Having decided to marry after a string of unsuccessful affairs, she firmly  tells Mandar that they should take time, to know each other, before finalizing the marriage.  But, in the meanwhile, she too decides to live with a ‘live in’ partner; till Mandar goes to confess to her, everything about his past. It is interesting to note in the climax scene, Trupti suggesting Mandar to get himself tested for HIV.

The film does have something to convey, with instant humour at few spots.  But, in most of the scenes, it has turned a typical porn type film. Perhaps, taking full advantage of the script of the film. There are too many flashbacks, trying to cover the periods like 1990, 2001, 2014 from the present times; and that too very frequently, which is disappointing. The film’s music is also not very appealing, with too many singers used, for different songs played in the background.

As far as the performances are concerned, Gulshan Devaiya is just fine, as he doesn’t have much to do with his acting; but just play his sex games. Neena Kulkarni and Ravindra Mankani playing Gulshan’s parents, have done well. One doesn’t know, why a top Marathi actress like sai tamhankar should play such a cheap character, which has no scope in this film. Perhaps, she has been used just namesake; or there is a possibility of her scenes sexy scenes gone in censor cuts. But, Radhika Apte as Trupti is very impressive. She has tried to make every scene of hers,  very lively. Good support comes from Sagar Deshmukh.

It is not advisable to watch this film with family. In short ‘Hunterrr’ is neither a comedy film, nor an art film. One may like to call it a sex film, for those who enjoy such ‘Vasugiri’( Sex starving attitude of the hero)  shown in the film. By the way, not all the women like it.
