Kimberly nets 2 in Mumbai’s big win


Hosts Mumbai scored an emphatic 7-0 victory against Osmanabad in a Group-A match, on the opening day of the LIC-Maharashtra (WIFA) State Inter-District Senior Women’s Football Championship -2016, organized by MDFA (Mumbai District Football Association) and played at the Goan Sports Association ground, Cross Maidan on Tuesday.

Earlier, Yuva Sena leader, Shri Aditya Thackeray, Chairman of MDFA inaugurated the tournament during a colourful opening ceremony. Also present on the occasion was WIFA Hon. Gen. Secretary, Souter Vaz, WIFA CEO, Henry Menezes, MDFA President, Digambar Khandalkar and other MDFA Executive Committee members.

The Mumbai outfit taking time to settle down enjoyed a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first half, but they came back roaring in the second, scoring five goals during this period to close out the victory.

Enterprising midfielder Kimberly Fernandez played a pivotal role and scored twice, while teammates Juhi Shah, Akanksha Khandalkar, Priya Tiwari, Karen Pais and Pooja Dhamal, all chipped in with a goal apiece.

In a Group-C match, Gondia riding on the lone strike from Deep Tripathi managed to put it across Jalgon by a 1-0 margin at the Karnatak Sporting Association ground.

Meanwhile, Ahmednagar and Bhandara have pulled from the tournament at the last moment. Both teams had been drawn in Group-A. As a result, the organizers have decided that Mumbai and Osmanabad will play a double leg in the group.
