‘Mirzya’ fails to create impact on the audience

The popular tragic love stories of Punjab ‘Heer Ranjha’, ‘Sohini Mahiwal’  have already inspired Bollywood film makers to make films on this subject. The third love story ‘Mirza Sahiban’ has now inspired  film maker  Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra to present his recently released film ‘Mirzya’, which is also debut film of Harshavardhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, grand daughter of former Bollywood actress Usha Kiran. Mirzya poster

So, we see two parallel stories running simultaneously in this film, with the same lead pair part of it. The first one is the love story inspired by Mirza-Sahiban, set during the ancient  period where we see archery competition,  in which the hero showing his skills to impress a pretty woman, who falls in love with him, much against the wish of her people. At the same time, we see little Munish and Suchitra, the soul mates studying in the same class, very much attached to each other. So much so that the girl going out of her way to help the boy avoid punishment in the class for not doing his homework. But, when the Teacher punishes Suchitra. The boy in retaliation shoots  the teacher next day morning, which is a cold blooded murder. Needless to say that he is admitted to remand home, from where he runs away, committing another crime.

Years later, both of them meet at Prince  Karan’s farm house, when Munish , who looks after horses, is asked by karan  to train Suchitra in horse riding. Actually, Suchitra is to get married to Karan. But, while narrating each other’s past, both of them recognise each other. Initially, Munish tries to avoid Suchitra, but later he too cannot live without her. So, they run away with the help of Munish’s well wisher and  friend Zeenat( Anjali Patil) .  The film concludes  with a dramatic climax.

The film does present a folk tale, but except for being musical with about 15 songs in it, the screenplay of this film disappoints. The character of Harshavardhan is not convincing. Even Saiyami Kher opting for Harshavardhan a criminal, instead of getting married  to a wealthy prince played by Anuj Choudhary, only because he happens to be her childhood friend, fails to satisfy the audience. Saiyami looks good in both the stories , while Harshavardhan  doesn’t find much scope for his acting. Sporting beard like a criminal, this film has turned out to be a debut film for him. Nothing special about it. Good support comes from Anjali Patil, Art Malik & k.K.Raina, while Om Puri has been wasted in a small role.

Good cinematography and music are the only two areas, where the film scores. But, the songs are played at regular intervals, just for the sake of taking unnecessary breaks  during the screenplay. Otherwise, ‘Mirzya’  is just another love story, based on a folk take, which has however failed  to create desired impact of a folk tale on the audience.
