Mongia holds slender lead

Nitin Mongia of the Sailing School of India (SSI), Mumbai, managed to hold on to his lead in Enterprises, with two second place finishes and an eighth position as the wind dropped towards evening at the Wet ’n Wild Sailing Regatta at the picturesque Pawana Lake on Saturday..

Meanwhile, Deelip Kumar of the EME Sailing Association (EMESA), Secunderabad, came out all guns blazing, winning all five races (a first place is called a ‘gun’ in sailing parlance) in the Laser Standard class, adding to the two races he won on Friday  to take a commanding lead.

In 420s, Deep Rekhi and M Vidya of the Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC) stayed ahead of their club compatriots Chinna and S Varun, coming first in three races and ceding two.

In Laser Radials, Sachin Singha of EMESA split honours with Ramya Sarvanan (CESC) and Israj Ali (EMESA). He won three of the five races sailed on the second day of the championship, to surge into the lead, while Ramya and Israj took a race apiece to move into joint second place.

The Wet ’n Wild Sailing Regatta at Pawana Lake, being conducted at Morjim by the Little Bay Sailing Club, and the Corps of Engineers Sailing Club (CESC), has Lasers as its second-largest fleet. Optimists, Toppers, Windsurfers and Enterprise are the other classes participating in this mega-sailing event.

In Windsurfing, Derrick Menezes of the Goa Yachting Association (GYA) took an unassailable lead, winning all races of the day, over Zamir Mirza (GYA) and Karan Singh (CESC).

Optimists saw Chitresh Tatha (Tamil Nadu Sailing Association) take a crushing lead. Though he won only one race, consistently being in the first four saw him build his lead in the face of far more inconsistent rivals. His club cronies Navyn Prabhakar, Anirudh K S and R Neelanand are in a close contest for the second and third places.
