“With cricket undergoing a sea change in the present scenario, with cricket matches being played in three different formats- 50-over, as well as instant T20 being the other formats in addition to Test cricket , it’s our endeavour to make a budding cricketer, capable himself to play in all the three formats of the game,” said former India Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer, at a press conference at the opening of the ‘Centre of Excellence in Cricket’ coaching scheme at Mumbai Police Gymkhana ground, here today.
While making his point, Wasim cited the case of Cheteshwar Pujara, India’s best No 3 batsman after Rahul Dravid in Test matches. “ Unfortunately, he is not considered good enough for the other two formats. Imagine Pujara not even finding his name or even being considered in IPL auction,” he added.
The two-week long coaching stint took off with 35 boys in two different age groups of under-16 and under-14, will go through batting, bowling and fielding drills, under the watchful eyes of Wasim Jaffer. Wasim is being assisted by other reputed coaches like Vinayak Samant and Sanotsh Shinde, both ex-Mumbai Ranji Trophy players. The camp will be full day affair during its entire duration, where all the aspects of cricket, right from the art of bowling – both pace and spin , batting, fielding skills, fitness and training, cricket psychology and mental toughness will be covered.
Former Sri lanka legendary fast bowler Chaminda Vaas will be joining the Centre shortly, according Mr Jwala Singh, the Director of MCC –Jwala Sports Foundation, the organisers of this coaching camp.
