Shubham Ambre bags Triple Crown


17 year old Shubham Ambre created a new record in the 4 Star Mumbai Suburban District Ranking Table Tennis Tournament late evening today. Shubham bagged triple crown winning Jr. Boys’ Singles, Youth Boys’ Singles and the Men’s singles crown beating his opponents Raegan Albequerque twice( Boys’ and Youth event)  and Top seed Eric Fernandes one after the other. And all his matches turned out to be well fought battles. Earlier in the afternoon, Shubham played three semi finals. So, it must have been a really tiring day for the youngster, having played almost 40 games in just 5 to 6 hours.

Raegan Albuquerque who encountered Shubham twice, also displayed good stroke play, but was very unlucky to lose the deciding 7th game over extra points in the Youth Boys Singles finals. Earlier in the Jr. Boys Finals, Raegan had stretched Shubham to six games, managing two games from him. Shubham’s parents and his younger brother were present at the venue, to witness this great moment in Shubham’s life. In the women’s singles final, ONGC’s Divya Deshpande beat Reserve Bank’s Shweta Parte, in six well contested games to win the finals with the set score of 4-2, to lift the women’s crown.

In the Girl’s singles final, Manasi Chiplunkar was leading 3-0 against Dyuti Patki, but dropped the next two games, due to consistent attack from Dyuti. However, Manasi attacked well to bag the sixth game and the crown.

In the Veterans’ Singles event hard hitter Kiran Salian proved his supremacy, defeating Rajesh Mudam with the set score of 4-2 in the finals, to win the crown. In the Cadet Boys Singles T.K Srikanth of Jamnabai Narsee Int. School (JNIS) displayed his talent, winning the finals 3-2 against Jash Modi  in spite of being down 1-2 in the five game set. Srikanth kept his cool throughout the match. In the cadet Girls final, Tia D’souza proved too good for Sampada Bhiwandkar, as she won her match in three straight games.

8 Times National TT Champion Kamlesh Mehta was the chief guest and gave away the prizes of Men’s and Women’s event. But, before the prize distribution function, three former players from Mumbai, namely Mahendra Chiplunkar,Mamata Prabhu & Shalmalee Mhatre Gosar were felicitated for their past performance in Table Tennis, at the national and international level. The overall event was very well organised.
