Somaiya Sports Academy eked out a close 1-0 win against ICL Payyade SC in a keenly fought First Division match of the MDFA League 2017-2018 and played at the St. Xavier’s ground, Parel. After a barren first half, striker Sagar Singh scored the lone goal in the 72nd minute to secure Somaiya’s victory.
Earlier, a spirited Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana (WCG) held their nerves and showed loads of determination to defeat Tarun Sporting Club 4-3. Consistent striker Eric Dowling scored in the second minute to put WCG ahead before Gleason Rodrigues struck twice in a space of as many minutes (24th and 28th minutes) to give Willingdon a solid 3-0 lead. However, Tarun Sporting fought back and managed to cut the deficit with Kaushal Meher scoring their first goal in the 38th minute as the first ended 3-1 in favour of Willingdon.
After switching sides, Tarun Sporting managed to score two goals through Oliver Aitolya in the 42nd minute and Benjamin Zolar in the 65th minute to level the scores.
But, Willingdon came up with more strike through Saumil Damor’s goal in the 78th minute to clinch a tight win and take away all the three points.
In Third Division encounters, RCF Colony Boys defeated FC Mithagar 3-0 with Pratik Dabak striking a brace of goals and Apoorva Bhagat getting one. In the second match, Godwin Kunder scored the winner as Amigos FC beat Azad Nagar Utsav Samiti 1-0.
