Summer stars in Companeroes win


Talented and enterprising striker Summer Gonsalves scored a superb goal, which proved to be the match winner as Companeroes SC scraped past Bandra Packers ‘A’ in an absorbing women’s semi-final match of the 23rd Bandra Gymkhana Open Rink Football Tournament and played under floodlights at the Demonte Park Recreational Ground, Bandra.

In the finals, Companeroes will meet Mumbai United who defeated Bandra Packers ‘B’ by a narrow 2-1 margin. Junior India international Abeer Arsiwalla and Bhagyashree were on target with a goal each for the winners, while Jesika Kuttian got the lone goal for the losers.

Meanwhile in men’s open quarter-final matches, Bombastic Rockies SC blanked Mighty Young Joe ‘A’ 3-0, while Good Shepherd, Andheri overcame fancied Celtic 70-70 by a 2-1 margin. In another upset, Mighty Young Joe ‘B’ team defeated favourites Joga Bonita 3-1. Autonomous SC also advanced to the last four round beating Chimbai SC 1-0.

Men’s Veterans (semi-finals): Golden Gunners 3 (Clement Travaso, Douglas D’Sena, Osborne D’Souza) bt St. Joseph’s, Juhu 2 (Connie Pereira, Anslem Creado); Macabbi, Dadar 2 (Shankar Thakur 2) bt Central Railway Mumbai Division 1(Sanjay).
