After held goalless in the first half, captain Tainsh Shiriskar struck twice in the second half to steer Thakur Vidyamandir and junior college past St. Xaviers (Vile Parle) 2-0 to enter the Boys under-14 quarterfinals of the Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament (for Suburban schools) of Maharashtra government’s DSO (Divisional Sports Office), organized by Vision Sports Reconnect and Fairplay Sports Management at Francis D’Assisi high school ground (Borivali) ground here today.

Favourites St Francis D’Assisi tried their best, but their forwards failed to get past Rustomjee Cambridge defenders. However, after both were tied 0-0 at the regulation time, St Francis prevailed 6-5 in the tie breaker. A brace each by Atharva Dhumal and Aman Shaikh saw C.P.Goenka (Juhu) outplay St. Anthony’s from Vakola 4-0.
In the girls under-17 section, Udyachal (Vikhroli)’s diminutive Avani Patole relentllessly made repeated inroads from the left flank, but CNM (Vile Parle)defenders blocked her attempts. It was only late in the first half that Avani found the net with a deceptive push, which saw the goalkeeper going other way. While in another tie, Apostolic Carmel had a tough time against fancied Ryan International (Kandivali), but found the winning goal through Florian Ferreira in the second half.
