Women oriented films do well, despite demonetization effect

The ultimate goal of the demonetization move in India is obviously to make the economy stronger and eliminate the parallel unaccounted and untaxed cash in circulation. While this is expected to create positive long term consequences, for a month or two, one expected it to affect the purchase power of an individual, which also included the viewership of feature films in cinema halls. But, this did not happen. Two films released during the past two weeks were not affected at all.

Vidya Balan in Kahani-2

Gauri Shinde’s ‘Dear Zindagi’ starring Sahshrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt released on 25th November 2016 did good business for first 10 days, nearing collections of Rs. 60 Cr. Later, Sujoy Ghosh’s film ‘kahani -2, starring Vidya Balan in the lead is also doing well with first four days collection nearing Rs. 20 Cr. Incidentally, both these films present strong women oriented subjects.

While ‘Dear Zindagi’ is targeted at young audience, taking up the subject of ‘break up’ suffered by a young female cinematographer and showing the way to come out of this problem, Sujaoy Ghosh film ‘Kahani 2’ is a suspense filled thriller, with an equally good screenplay. As expected, both these films have given a lot of scope to their lead female characters and therefore Alia Bhatt and Vidya Balan  have given their best through their respective characters, with Vidya Balan scoring over her young Alia Bhatt, displaying versatility in acting. Not to be missed films, for real film lovers.
