After making a murder based thriller ‘Drishyam’ in 2013 Jeethu Joseph is back after eight years with ‘Drishyam 2’ which is a sequel to his 2013 film. ‘Drishyam 2’ is resumption of George Kutty case with the local police, having received much humiliation due to their inability to solve Varun’s disappearance, decide to reinvestigate the case, under the supervision of Kerala East IG Thomas Bastin IPS, who is a junior and friend of Geetha Prabhakar( Varun’s Mother) .
The story of this film begins six years after George Kutty ( Mohanlal) was is released by Court of law as there were no concrete evidences to prove him guilty. In the meanwhile, George kutty and his family comprising of his wife Rani( Meena), daughters Anju( Ansiba) and Anu( Esther ) lead an affluent life. He is now an owner of a movie theatre and is also in process of making a film, for which he is in constant touch with a prominent screenwriter. Though the family is comfortable, Anju hasn’t forgotten her past and gets repeated attacks of epilepsy.
With the Police quietly reopening the case, we find some new characters in the form of Jose from the same village who is a convict in his brother in law murder case; now released from jail and a couple in George Kutty’s neighbourhood – Sarith and Sabu who have shifted here two years ago. Rani is close to Saritha being sympathetic to her, as her drunkard husband Sabu abuses her. The film progresses with some more developments taking place which once again seem to be going against George Kutty. How he and his family face this second phase filled with distress, is what director Jeetu Joseph has tried to present through this sequel.
Unlike the first part, this sequel does take time to take off. But, once the reinvestigation begins we find all interesting happenings in the screenplay, holding you with the film.
Performances by all the lead artistes are worth appreciating. Having involved in the original film, they could very well understand the importance of every scene in this film in continuity . Even the artistes like Murali Gopi, Ganesh Kumar, Anjali Nair, Sumesh Chandran , Ajith and others, playing the additional important characters have offered very good support. And that makes this film more gripping with a twists, especially in the second half. Impressive Cinematography by Satheesh Kurup and good music by Anil Johnson are other two attractions of this film. With English subtitles this is certainly a worth watch Malayalam film on Amazon Prime Video.
