‘Hero’ fails to impress with its old wine in a new bottle

Not all the remakes of old hit films have been successful. Best examples are films like ‘Karz’,’ Zanjeer’, ‘Chasme Badoor’, ‘Devdas’ and so on. Few exceptions are films like ‘Himmatwala’ & ‘Don’. But, they could attain some success, because of the performances of the artistes and the treatment given by the director in a different way,  to suit the young audience of today . Latest released film ‘Hero’, which is a remake of 1983 hit film of Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri, directed by Subhash Ghai, is almost like serving old wine in a new bottle. Hero standie

Sooraj (Sooraj Pancholi) is shown a gangster from Mumbai,  to suit the present time, who meets Radha (Athiya Shetty), daughter of the city’s Police IG ( Tigmanshu Dhulia) . One day, Sooraj, under the  instructions from his gangster boss, Pasha (Aditya Pancholi), kidnaps Radha, posing as  a police officer, telling her that he that he has received instructions from the police,  to take her away from city for some time. Now, is this plot acceptable in today’s time ? This is the biggest weakness of the story of this film, when girls in Mumbai have become smarter. Moreover, who would dare to kidnap a Police chief’s daughter ?

Anyway, as the film progresses. We find Sooraj  confessing  to Radha that he had kidnapped her. So, as predicted, we find  Radha falling in love  with Sooraj, and their love story creating  problems for Pasha. What follows , in the later part of this film , is series of fight scenes, to keep the screenplay moving further.  The film has failed to impress, especially for poor presentation of screenplay and weak dialogues. Now, comparing this film with the original film, the music of this film has failed to impress, in spite of having three different music directors.  They could not match anywhere near Laxmi Pyare’s flute music.  Neither, you can  call this film an intense musical love story , nor it is a gripping action film.

What is good about this film, is good photography and better debut performance of Suraj Pancholi . Special effects have also been used well, going with the new technology. However, performance by Athiya Shetty doesn’t appeal.  Director Nikhil Advani hasn’t been able to add that original flavour  into this remake. Producer Salman Khan’s cameo is also not very appealing. Sharad kelkar has been wasted in this film; so are the other artistes. Aditya Pancholi’s Pasha went nowhere near Amrish Puri, in original film. The film has therefore turned out to be just an average film.
