Written by Retired Major General Nitin Gadkari , ‘OSCAR TANGO( On Target)’ is a timely novel , which throws light on the efforts put in by our brave Indian Army personnel and intelligence wing while countering the terrorist activities and their plans supported by our neighburing enemy country for the past four decades in Kashmir . The writer has himself served the Indian Army for 37 years, and therefore his personal experience and detailed analysis of the modus operandi used by our enemies to exploit the sentiments of the Kashmiri youth and the atrocities by their supporters on poor locals has been clearly highlighted with specific references to such self-styled leaders.
Most of the important happenings covered in this novel take place between 2012 and 2016 with end game noticed in October 2016, yet the novel spans a period of 40 years. It starts with a diabolical plot hatched across country’s borders in August of 1980, to find a final solution for Indian Kashmir. It involves mating local Kashmiri girls with Afghan Mujahdeen of Pushto origin. The babies conceived out of this mating are genetically re-engineered to make one particular gene very strong; that of loyalty. The boys are kept and nurtured in madrasa till they are 15 years of age. Then they are sent to Kashmir to be raised as sons of soil in foster homes. The ultimate plan being to train these boys to become the leaders in local political parties when they become adults and help Kashmir secede from India..
Though the novel is a work of fiction, it revolves around Colonel Jayesh, the protagonist and his efforts in suppressing the activities of terrorists backed by those across the border. It also shows how some of his seniors were involved in blocking his progress out of jealousy. However, more emphasis is on the positive attitude of the protagonist and the support he received whenever in trouble from his own subordinates , officers at the highest level and also from the locals, which is inspiring. Special mention about the characters like Ashfaq Khan, Col.Sudhir, Gul, Ruksana, and few others.
‘OSCAR TANGO’ is just not another interesting novel on India’s fight against terrorism, but it is an action packed thriller with interesting developments taking place especially in part II and III. The Part I goes in understanding the different characters, numbering about 20 besides Col. Jayesh. Each and every character finds importance in this novel , as more attention has been paid on their individuality. The author has also tried to show how the quick and timely decisions taken by the Government help the Armed forces to perform their duties efficiently and also boost their morale. And therefore, while reading this novel ,sometimes you get the feel of watching an action packed spell binding feature film. Suspense has been well maintained and the climax is more captivating. It will not be surprising to find a Bollywood action film made on this story. Last but not the least, the concluding part of this novel is worth appreciating .
