Sanjay Hedge was an active social worker and had worked very hard for the past few years, to promote sports among the children in rural areas around Mumbai, through his Seva Sahayog Foundation , besides other social activities. He first set up a training academy for all sports at Karjat, so that selected children from nearby schools could be trained for special training in different sports.
Last year, he passed away due to heart failure. But, his equally committed wife Dr. Asmita Hegde carried forward her husband’s mission. Another sports academy was opened at Sanpada , Navi Mumbai recently in her husband’s memory. The mission of ‘Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy’ of Seva Sahayog Foundation is to motivate, engage and train students from underprivileged and rural areas to pursue mainstream Sports.
In the loving memory of their Director and Founder, Sanjay Ji Hegde, sports competitions such as wrestling, Mallakhamb, Table tennis, Chess, Weightlifting, Archery, and Short-put were held recently. The response was very good with 254 students in the age group of 14-17, both from Karjat and Sanapada centre taking part in this competition. Medals and certificates were distributed to the winners and good performers.
According to Dr. Asmita Hegde, In just one year, many students of Sanjay Hegde Sports Academy have performed brilliantly at district and state-level competitions. The special mention goes to Miss Rohini Modak, who graduated from the Academy, and has been selected to compete at International level competitions.
