The most popular film of yesteryears ‘Mother India’ was released on 25th October 197. So, today we are celebrating 63 years of ‘Mother India’.Mother India

 

Mehboob Khan  who made this classic film was an innovative pioneer producer-director of Indian cinema.  ‘Mother India’ which was a remake of his own 1940 film ‘Aurat’ , which was inspired by Pearl Buck’s ‘The Good Earth’. But, interestingly the title of this film was chosen to counter American author ‘s 1927 Katherine Mayo’s  book ‘Mother India’ , which vilified Indian culture. And therefore, its lead character reflects high moral values and the concept of what it means to be a mother to society through self-sacrifice. In short, ‘Mother India’ metaphorically represented India as a nation in the aftermath of independence, and suggested a strong sense of nationalism and nation-building.   Birju

 

The film  won the most prestigious awards of that time , the Filmfare Awards for Best Film and Best Director, two National Film Awards, and was a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

 

There is no doubt that it was a grand film, which will be remembered for its superb presentation by director Mehboob Khan , memorable performances by the artistes and wonderful technical support by all those behind the camera including cinematographer Faredoon Irani, music director Naushad and others.
