Indian youngsters Ankur Bhattacharjee and Yashaswini Ghorpade have won the Men’s and Women’s singles titles after winning the finals at the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, which concluded in Delhi at the Thyagaraj Stadium. Ankur who faced the challenge from Payas Jain, was stretched to seven games in an exciting final match, which he won 4-3.

21 year old Yashaswini Ghorpade gave a superior performance in the Women’s singles final, which was also played between two Indian players. While overcoming her senior team captain and 2nd seeded Sreeja Akula 4-1, young Yashaswini showed her better consistency during the rallies.

Eariler, during their Women’s semi final matches, both Sreeja and Yashaswini had a tough time overpowering their team mates Synrela Das and Sutirtha Mukherjee respectively with the same margin 4-3. Similarly, Ankur Bhattacharjee and Payas Jain surprised Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah respectively in the Man’s semi finals with the same margin of 4-1.
In all, India bagged 5 Gold medals in the individual events of singles and doubles, excluding only one Gold which was won by Shen Qi Wong/Javen Choong (Malaysia). During the Prize distribution ceremony, Chief Minister of Delhi Ms. Rekha Gupta gave away the medals and prize money to the winners.
