Jain Irrigation win ‘A’ Division title


The brilliant combined all-round performances of middle-order bat Sairaj Patil who smashed a century knock of 101 runs and off-spinner Shashank Attarde five for 29 runs were highlights as Jain Irrigation emerged champions by defeating Dr. D.Y.  Patil Group ‘B’ by a massive 120 runs in the ‘A’ Division final of the MCA Corporate Trophy 2023-24, organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association and played under floodlights at the MCA Cricket ground, BKC on Thursday night.

Put in to bat, Jain Irrigation powered by Patil aggressive 45-ball innings which was studded with nine well-timed boundaries and eight powerfully struck sixes which helped Jain Irrigation amass a competitive total of 242 for 6 wickets in 20 overs. Besides Patil’s thumping knock Ayush Zimare and Surah Shinde contributed 48 and 25 runs to swell the total. D.Y. Patil’s Ajay Singh 2 for 46 and Jitendra Padwal 2 for 60 were the most successful bowlers.

Later, Jain Irrigation bowled well and fielded brilliantly to dismiss D.Y. Patil batters for a measly 122 all out in 17.3 overs. Attarde with slow delivers did most of the damage and he received good support from Darshan Mangukiya who claimed 3 wickets for just 12 runs to hasten D.Y. Patil collapse. Middle-order bat, Parikshit tried to put up a fight a scored an unbeaten 55 runs (43-balls, 9×4,8×6).

Brief scores – ‘A’ Division (final): Jain Irrigation 242 for 6, 20 overs (Sairaj Patil 101 (45-balls, 9×4,8×6), Ayush Zimare 48, Suraj Shinde 25; Ajay Singh 2/46, Jitendra Padwal 2/60) beat D.Y. Patil Group ‘B’ 122 all out, 17.3 overs (Parikshit 55* (43-balls, 9×4,8×6), Musheer Khan 18; Shashank Attarde 5/29, Darshan Mangukiya 3/12). Result: Jain Irrigation won by 120 runs.


Champs Customs Red storm into semi-finals


Defending champions Mumbai Customs Red produced another strong dominant performance and recorded an authoritative 3-0 win against spirited Companeroes SC storm into the semi-finals of the Bandra Gymkhana Annual Open Rink Hockey Tournament 2024, played under floodlights at the Bandra Gymkhana tennis courts on Thursday night.

However, Mumbai Customs White were not as fortunate as they went down fighting 3-4 to a determined Mumbai Port Authority in another last eight encounter. For Port Authority outfit Harish Shindgi scored a brace of goals while Laxmikant Kawale and Stephen Swamy struck one each to seal their win while Mumbai Customs scored through Dharamveer Singh’s double strikes and one from Girish Pimple.

In another last eight match, India Rush were in impressive form and scored a stunning 5-3 win against CTC (Champions Training Centre) ‘A’. Leading India’s fighting performance was Pranit Naik and Shrikrishna Chaurasiya both striking two goals each and Raj Solanki adding one to complete the win. For CTCm Bhim Batala scored two goals and Kunal Gohil got one.

In the fourth match, Central Railway snatched a tight 2-1 win againt Union Bank of India to advance to the semi-finals. Shiromani Mouraya and Anup Walmiki were bang on target with a goal each for Central Railway who enjoyed a 2-0 lead before Union Bank of India pulled one back through (Navin Kheratkar’s efforts.

Men’s Open (quarter-finals): Mumbai Port Authority 4 (Harish Shindgi 2, Laxmikant Kawale, Stephen Swamy) beat Mumbai Customs 3 (Dharamveer Singh 2, Girish Pimple).

Mumbai Customs Red 3 (Nikhil Pardeshi 2, Iktidar Ishrat) beat Companeroes SC 0.

Catholic Gym record 3rd successive win


Catholic Gymkhana continued with their impressive winning form and recorded an authoritative 3-0 victory against Storm Chasers FC Colts in a Second Division match of the Mumbai Football Association (MFA) League 2023-2024 and played at the Neville D’Souza ground, Bandra on Friday.

Putting up a solid combined performance, strikers Amol Patil, Bhavesh Meher and Curt D’Mello scored one goal each to secure Catholic Gymkhana third successive win and now top the table in Group-C with nine points.

Catholic Gymkhana started in a positive attacking fashion and called the shots from the start, and after wasting a series of clear chances they finally hit the target with hard-working striker Amol Patil scoring the first goal in the 27th minute. Eight minutes later, enterprising midfielder Bhavesh Meher’s long range shot deflected off a defender and went into the back of the net and gave Catholic Gymkhana a healthy 2-0 cushion.

After changing sides, Storm Chasers put up an improved showing and made a couple of raids at the Catholic Gymkhana goal, but they were not allowed to have a clear look at goal. Catholic Gymkhana, despite holding the upper hand, managed only one more goal late in the second half when Curt D’Mello making his debut rose high and headed home Jalmesh Nijai’s measured chip for the right to complete the winning tally. Later, Substitutes Aman Meher and Emmanuel Macwan were both guilty of failing to score from close.

In another match of the same division, Pena Madridista FC got the better of Soccer A-Z by a fighting 2-1 margin. Jackson S. and Sahil Ninawe were bang on target for Madridista while Soccer A-Z scored through Manish Singh.

Result – Second Div: Catholic Gymkhana 3 (Amol Patil, Bhavesh Meher, Curt D’Mello) beat Storm Chasers FC Colts 0.

Pena Madridista FC 2 (Jackson S., Sahil Ninawe) beat Soccer A-Z 1 (Manish Singh).

Greater Mumbai Police emerge champions


Producing a brilliant all-round performance, Greater Mumbai Police SC ‘B’ emerged champions defeating JSW Steel Ltd. SC by a convincing 9-wickets in the ‘C’ Division final of the MCA Corporate Trophy 2023-24, organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association and played at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana ground, Marine Drive on Thursday.


The players of the victorious Greater Mumbai Police SC team are all smiles as they pose with MCA Apex Council member Abhay Hadap and Police Inspector Sanjay Nikam, the Joint Hon. Secretary, Mumbai Police Gymkhana at the Mumbai Police Gymkhana ground.  

Electing to bat first, JSW Steel batted irresponsibly and were bowled out for a paltry 88 in 17.5 overs. Later, Mumbai Police easily surpassed the winning target reaching 90 for one wicket in 15 overs.

Mumbai Police playing with plenty of determination rocked the JSW Steel top order picking three early wickets with just five runs on the board in the second over. Both the openers Parag Jadhav (3 runs) and captain Nitesh Koli (1 run) were run out and number three left-handed bat Ishaque Shaikh did not open his account. Thereafter, middle order bats, left-handed Mohit Tamaichekar 33 and Ramesh Kami 19 managed to arrest the slide with a 43-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

But, Mumbai Police bowlers, left-arm spinner Anuj Giri 2 for 29 and leg-spinner Swapnil 2 for 28 once again put pressure on the rival batters and claimed the remaining wickets at regular intervals to restrict JSW Steel to a low total.

Later, Mumbai Police faced no problems from the JSW Steel bowlers as the opening batting pair of Yash Ramchandani unbeaten 40 runs (39-balls, 5×4) and Tanmay Mayekar 29 runs stitched together a partnership of 63 runs for the first wicket which put them on the road to victory. Later, Chintamani Kamble unbeaten 12 runs in the company of Ramchandani ensured no more setbacks and the team easily crossed the finish line with plenty to spare.

Mumbai Police left-arm spinner Anuj Giri 2 for 29 was later declared as the ‘Player of the final’.

Brief scores – ‘C’ Div (final): JSW Steel Ltd SC 88 all out, 17.5 overs (Mohit Tamaichekar 33; Anuj Giri 2/29, Swapnil Kulaye 2/28) lost to Greater Mumbai Police Sports Club ‘B’ 90 for 1, 15 overs (Yash Ramchandani 40* (39-balls, 5×4). Result: Greater Mumbai Police won by 9 wickets.

Central smoothly sail into semis


Defending champions Central Railway dished out a slick attacking display and stormed past Sea View Sports Club by recording a convincing 4-0 win to book their place in the semi-finals of the Bandra Gymkhana Annual Open Rink Hockey Tournament 2024, played under floodlights at the Bandra Gymkhana tennis courts on Wednesday night.

Leading Central Railway’s charge was opportunistic goal-scorer Jivan Toppo who was bang on target with two strikes, while Shivani Singh Saini and Anuja Singh scored one each to complete the win.

Meanwhile, in a Men Open match, Mumbai Port Authority, inspired by the brilliance of ace sharpshooter Stephen Swamy who scored a hat-trick of goals defeated Savio Hockey Academy by a 4-1 margin. After Yogesh Borkar opened the scoring, Swamy got the next three goals while Mario Fernandes scored the lone goal for the academy team.

In Girls’ U-14 matches, India Rush SC prevailed over Carmel of St. Joseph 2-0 with Mariyam Kasmani and Henthoi Seram scoring the goals.

Later, Duruelo Convent riding on the twin strikes from Ankita Prasad went on to defeat Don Bosco (Borivali) 5-0. Ankita’s teammates Anushka Salvi, Aarya Jadhav and Kritika Konduskar chipped in with a goal each to seal the win.

In Boys’ U-14 matches, Children’s Academy proved too strong for Dr. Antonio DaSilva and romped to a 7-0 win. Harshiv Gohil and Kartikeyan Pandey combined effectively and scored four and three goals respectively to complete the big win.

Later, Don Bosco Academy got the better of Don Bosco Blue 5-3. Kartik Ganvir and Kushaagra Singh struck two goals apiece while Yashveer Chadha got one for the Academy outfit, while Don Bosco Blue scored through Ayush Mane, Arjun Pawar and Malhar Gargote.

Gritty Warriors SC pip India Rush 7-6


Warriors Sports Club put a solid fighting performance and managed to get the better of India Rush Sports Club 7-6 via the sudden death tie-breaker in an engrossing and fiercely contested Women’s Open first round match of the Bandra Gymkhana Annual Open Rink Hockey Tournament 2024, played under floodlights at the Bandra Gymkhana tennis courts on Tuesday night. The match finished in a 2-2 draw.

For Warriors the goal-scorers were Akshaya Kannan, Meenakshi Pandey and Wilma Kannan all scoring two goals each while Nimmy Nair struck one. India Rush SC scored through a hat-trick of goals from Priya S., Kashish S. scored two and Nanavi K. got one to keep them in the fight.

Later, in a one-sided Men Open second round encounter, India Rush Sports Club charged past Antonian War by a convincing 9-2 scoreline. Leading the scoring for India Rush was striker Ravi Bharadia who notched up a fine hat-trick while teammates Akash Rai and Rhythm Mamnia contributed with two goals each and Pranit Naik and Dyanesh Vijaykar chipped in with one goal apiece to complete the winning tally. For the Antonian War team their hard-working forward and captain Aamod Ghadge scored both the goals.

In a keenly contested Boys’ Under-14 match, Don Bosco Academy (Matunga) and St. Stanislaus Yellow (Bandra) shared the spoils as they were engagaed in a high-scoring 3-3 draw.

Later, St. Stanislaus Green defeated Dr. Antonio DaSilva by a comfortable 4-2 marin.

Fort Vijay, Gamdevi advance into semis


Fort Vijay Cricket Club and Gamdevi Cricketers scored comfortable victories to advance to the semi-finals of the 3rd MCA Under-19 Cricket Tournament organized by Bhama Cricket Club in association with Mumbai Cricket Club under the aegis of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

In a quarter-final match, Fort Vijay CC defeated Sind Sports Club at the P.J. Hindu Gymkhana ground, Marine Drive. In another last eight encounter, Gamdevi Cricketers played well to overcome Mumbai Cricket Club at Cross Maidan.

Fort Vijay bowling first, dismissed Sind Sports Club for 114 runs in 23.5 overs and later they marched to victory making 116 runs for 5 wickets in 28.2 overs.

Mumbai Cricket Club batting first scored 159 runs for 6 wickets in 35 overs and then Gamdevi Cricketers easily scored 163 runs for 6 wickets in 34 overs to seal the win.

Brief scores: Sind Sports Club 114 all out, 23.5 overs (Yaseen Shaikh 49; Shivam Gupta 5/16, Himanshu Singh 3/19) lost to Fort Vijay Cricket Club 116 for 5, 28.2 overs (Noor Sayyad 38*, Omkar Patankar 37*). Result: Fort Vijay Cricket Club won by 5 wickets.

Mumbai Cricket Club 159 for 6, 35 overs (Amant Hussain 47, Shashank Kumar 38) lost to Gamdevi Cricketers 163 for 6, 34 overs (Arjun Lotlikar 52, Aryan Sakpal 36, Krish Kanavade 30). Result: Gamdevi Cricketers won by 4 wickets.


Zara, Nimesh once again set the pool on fire


For  Khar Gymkhana’s  ace swimmers Zara Bakshi (5 golds and a silver) and Nimesh Muley (4 golds, a silver and 2 bronze),   the final day of the  37th Otters Club Open Swimming Championships, proved  to be continuation of yet another gold haul hunt, having  earlier, made a clean sweep in their respective  women’s and men’s events in the MIG CC event, held earlier this month.

Zara though topped  in five of their six events that she took part,  the existing marks eluded her  in all these events. Moreover, she finished second best behind  ace swimmer  Rujuta (Vridhawal Khade’s wife) in the women’s 50m free style as well. .

Seasoned Nimesh Muley was just unstoppable in the men’s section, topping  100m butterfly  stroke  (00:58.50 secs), 50m free style (00:22.64),  100m free style (00:51.17) and 200m free style (01:56.78 ).  But like Zara, he could not better any of the existing timings.  Incidentlly, Nimesh  finished second best to Ashwin Jaiswar ,of MGMO, who won the 200m individual medley event (02:11.24).  

However, MGMO’s Archit Morvekar’s two-record breaking efforts, viz. in 100m breast stroke (01:09.03) and 100m free style 00:53.18) in the boys under-215 events brought cheers to his Club. While Forest Club’s  Naishi Ruhil with three golds and two silvers excelled for her club.

The individual champions in various age groups wereMEN: Nimesh Muley (Khar Gym) – 4Golds+1 silver+2 bronze. WOMEM: Zara Bakshi (KG)- 5G+1S.

Ramshankar Sonkar nets hat-trick in Bosco Academy big win


Opportunistic goal-scorer Ramshankar Sonkar was in sparkling form and notched up the first hat-trick of the tournament to power Don Bosco Academy to a fluent 6-0 win against DSMT Sports Club the a Men’s Open first round match of the Bandra Gymkhana Annual Open Rink Hockey Tournament 2024, played under floodlights at the Bandra Gymkhana tennis courts on Monday night.

Sonkar showed great anticipation and sharpness and pounced on every opportunity to have a strike at the rival goal. He scored the opening three goals before Aryan Pagare scored a brace and Kartik Banot struck one to round-off the winning target.

Earlier, Companeroes SC got the better of Republicans SC by a 4-1 margin. Oriston D. scored two goals while Sanket D. and Daniel D’Souza scored one each for the winners, while Republicans pulled one back through Godwin D.

In an absorbing and exciting Women’s Open encounter, Kangleipak Blue (Manipur) pulled off fighting 2-1 win against Duruelo Convent to advance to the second round. Leisangthem Natali and Ningombam Kamla were bang on target for the Maniput outfit while Duruelo Convent scored through Savi Sakpal.

Results – Girls – U-14: St. Theresa beat Don Bosco 5-0.

Duruelo Convent beat SBO Association 5-0.

Carmel of St. Joseph beat New Bombay City School 3-1.

Boy’s U-14: Children Academy 7 beat St. Stanislaus ‘B’ 7-2.

Don Bosco beat Antonio DaSilva 9-0.

Women Open:  Kangleipak Blue (Manipur) 2 (Leisangthem Natali, Ningombam Kamla) beat Duruelo Convent 1 (Savi Sakpal).

Men Open: Companeroes SC 4 (Oriston D. 2, Sanket D., Daniel D’Souza) beat Bombay Republicans SC 1 (Godwin D.).

NMSA clinch Elite title for fourth straight year


Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) maintained their supremacy as they were crowned Elite Division champions in the Thane Football Association (TFA) League 2023-2024.


The triumphant Navi Mumbai SA players are all smiles after winning the TFA Elite Division title for the fourth successive season.

Assured of winning their Elite Division title for the fourth successive year, NMSA fielded their reserve players and suffered a 1-3 defeat against Kukri XI FC in the concluding league match.

NMSA who were unbeaten till this first loss, finished at the top with an unassailable 25 points in the six-team double leg. They managed to record eight wins and one draw from the 10 matches played.

Kukri XI finished a distant second position with 19 points from six wins, one draw and three defeats and had to settle for the runners-up prize.

S.P. Football Academy completed their league with a tally of 16 points from five victories, one draw and four losses and clinched the third place prize.

Thane City FC (15 points), Seawoods FC (6 points) and Pro Team (3 points) finished in fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Final standings – Elite Div: 1. Navi Mumbai SA (25 points), 2. Kukri XI FC (19 points), 3. S.P. Football Academy (16 points), 4. Thane City FC (15 points), 5. Seawoods FC (6 points), 6. Pro Team (3 points).
