Zara, Nimesh once again set the pool on fire


For  Khar Gymkhana’s  ace swimmers Zara Bakshi (5 golds and a silver) and Nimesh Muley (4 golds, a silver and 2 bronze),   the final day of the  37th Otters Club Open Swimming Championships, proved  to be continuation of yet another gold haul hunt, having  earlier, made a clean sweep in their respective  women’s and men’s events in the MIG CC event, held earlier this month.

Zara though topped  in five of their six events that she took part,  the existing marks eluded her  in all these events. Moreover, she finished second best behind  ace swimmer  Rujuta (Vridhawal Khade’s wife) in the women’s 50m free style as well. .

Seasoned Nimesh Muley was just unstoppable in the men’s section, topping  100m butterfly  stroke  (00:58.50 secs), 50m free style (00:22.64),  100m free style (00:51.17) and 200m free style (01:56.78 ).  But like Zara, he could not better any of the existing timings.  Incidentlly, Nimesh  finished second best to Ashwin Jaiswar ,of MGMO, who won the 200m individual medley event (02:11.24).  

However, MGMO’s Archit Morvekar’s two-record breaking efforts, viz. in 100m breast stroke (01:09.03) and 100m free style 00:53.18) in the boys under-215 events brought cheers to his Club. While Forest Club’s  Naishi Ruhil with three golds and two silvers excelled for her club.

Twin sisters – Saanvi, Anvi steal the show


Hosts pride the Deshwal sisters – Saanvi and Anvi –  put up splendid in the 37th  Otters  Club’s Open Swim Gala, held (April 21) at their Club’s swimming pool yesterday. While Sanvi, who clinched  overall five golds and one silver was the lone girl record-breaker in the 50m breast stroke   girls under-13 section, clocking 01:13.73 seconds, as she eclipsed the  2018’s record of Vedika Amin (01:13.75 secs), Anvi followed her home with a gold in 100m free style and  3 silvers and two bronze.

Archit Morvekar , of MGMO, rewrote 100m free style and 100m breast strokes records in the boys under-15 categories. Overall Archit, ended with three golds  and two silvers apart from setting two new marks. And on way  to setting new marks, he shattered Khar Gymkhana’s Neel Roy’s 2016 timing of  00:53.46 secs  with the new timing of 00:53.18 secs. in the free style and then overcame  Otters Dolphin’s Srish Mulik’s  2019  mark (01:09.50 ) by clocking 01:09.02 secs.

 Forest Club’s Shwet Poojary, was the other record-breaker as he rewrote Otter’s Armaan Sikka (00:59.92) with a timng of 0:59,52secs in the boys under-15 100m breast stroke event.Incidentally, Shwet also bagged gold in the 200m individual medley, pushing Archit to second place.

The organizers of this swimming Gala, got a boosted  with the active support of  sponsors of Mansons Foundations,  a non-government  organization having  mission to provide basic sports facilities, which include healthcare and educational facilities to the marginalized section of the Society.


Ex-national star Khade strikes double gold in Otters’ Swim Open Gala


Virdhawal Khade ,from Khar Gymkhana, a former national record holder in 50m, 100 and 200m freestyle events, has been outstanding swimmer for the country, having represented in Asian Games (2018) and Commonwealth Games  (2008) in competitions for over a decade and that he showed in ample measures that he is  still cut above the rest while clinching double golds in the 37th  Otters  Club’s Open Swim Gala, held at their Club’s swimming pool yesterday. He triumphed in the 50m Free Style (00:25.78 secs) as well as 50m Breast stroke(00: 34.03 secs)  events, leaving the rest of the  field high and dry. Incidentally, Virdhawal was awarded Arjun Award in 2011.

While the corresponding events in the women’s section was dominated by Himanta Barbara ,of RFC, striking golds in the 50m Free Style and 50m Breast strokes comprehensively.

In the boys under-11 section, Rivan Kolahi ,of MGMO  swept the pool with four golds and two silvers While Heeva Patel of Bombay  YMCA , with three golds and two silver took the honours in the girls category.

The following were the age group champions:

 GIRLS: Under-11: Heeva Patel (YMCA) – 3 golds+2 silvers. Under-9: Pratyasha Guchhait (IIT, Bombay) – 4 golds+1 bronze.  Under-7:  Pahel Shah (CSMSS) – 4 golds.

BOYS: Under-11: Rivan Kolahi (MGMO)-   4 golds+2 silvers. Under-9: Daksh Shah (Ozone) -2 golds+2 silvers +1 bronze. 1 bronze.  Under-7:  Shaurya Agnihotri (CSMSS)- 3 golds + 1 silver.

Top swimmers for Otters’ Open Swim Gala


Top National and State swimmers will be seen in action in the 37th  Otters  Club’s Open Swim Gala, to be held on Saturday (April 20)  and Sunday (April 21) at their Club’s swimming pool.  

This year, the organizers of this two-day event, expect to receive over 450  participants in various age groups, got a boosted  with the active support of  sponsors of Mansons Foundation , a non-government  with a mission to provide basic sports facilities, which include healthcare and educational facilities to the marginalized section of the Society.


Zara, Nimesh sparkle as KG swimmers dominate


Ace  Khar Gymkhana swimmers  Zara Bakshi and Nimesh Muley dominated the final day’s proceedings with as many as overall 16 records were shattered  in the MIG Cricket Club’s  9th   Open Swimming Gala, held at their swimming pool at Bandra . Zara Bakshi set the pool on fire with four record-breaking efforts in the women’s under-30 category, winning 50m Back stroke, 50m Breast stroke, 50m Butterfly as well as 100m  individual  medley events.


All the champions in various age groups(with their trophies pose with the MIG president Mihir Bapat, Dr Vishal Sawant (Jt Secretaty-swimming), Shrikant Shetty (Gen Secretary) and hosts Pradeep Divgikar with other GMAAA officials.

However,  Nimesh, who  made clean sweep of all the six golds in the men’s section, viz. 50m Back stroke, 50m Breast stroke, 50m Breast stroke, 50m and 100m Free style as well as 100 m Individual medley events, but he could not better the existing marks in all his  events.

But Khar Gymkhana girls, Sanaya Shetty (under-16)  and Myraj Deshpande (Under-10) proved that they were cut above the rest. Sanaya won five golds with three record-breaking efforts, while equaling two meet records. Among others to sharing the final day’s honours were Forest Club’s Nishtaa Shetty,  who clinched  golds in all the six events that she took part in the girls under-12 section and Myrah Deshpande, also from Khar Gymkhana, who ended with four golds in the girls under-10 category.

While in the boys under-16 section, Om Satam, from Police Swmming Pool won five  record-breaking golds in the 50m back stroke, 50m breast stroke, 50m free style, 100 m free style 100m and individual medley.

The record-breakers were : WOMEN (U-30): Zara Bakshi (Khar Gym) – 4 NMR. BOYS U-16:  Om Satam (PSP)- 5 NMR+1 BMR. and Shewet Poojary (Forest Club)- 1NMR+ 3 BMR. GIRLS U-16: Sanya Shetty (Khar Gym) – 3 NMR+1 BMR and Richika Shetty (MGMO)- 2NMR+1BMR.GIRLS U-14:  Sannvi Deshwal (Otters Club)- 1 NMR. BOYS U-6: Kiyaar Palande (PSP)-1 NMR.


Om Satam makes clean sweep


OM SATAM, from Police Swimming Pool, made clean sweep with five golds with record-breaking efforts in the boys under-16 events of the MIG Cricket Club’s 9th   Open Swimmng Gala, held at their swimming pool at Bandra on today.  However, the Khar Gymkhana swimmers overall dominated the day’s show with Sanaya Shetty, who clinched five golds – all record breaking – to share the day’s honours  along with her Khar Gymkhana senior Zara Bakshi, who scored a hat-trick of golds in the women’s under-30 category.

While Om  won five  golds in the 50m back stroke, 50m breast stroke, 50m free style, 100 m free style 100m and individual medley , and in the process rewrote records in all the events the boys under-16 events.   While  aqua queen Sanaya too bagged five golds, including three record-breaking golds. Zara topped 50m breast stroke, 50m butterfly as well as 100m individual medley- all by setting new marks.

The record-breakers were : Women (U-30): 50m Breast Stroke:  Zara Bakshi (Khar Gym) –-00:35.62 secs. 50m Butterfly stroke: Zara Bakshi (Khar Gym)- 00:30.58 secs. 100m Individual medley: 01:10.95 secs. Girls U-16: Sanya Shetty (Khar Gym) – 3 NMR+1 BMR and Richika Shetty (MGMO)- 2NMR+1BMR.Girls U-14: Sannvi Deshwal (Otters Club)- 1 NMRBoys U-16:  Om Satam (PSP)- 5 NMR+1 BMR. Om Satam (PSP) and Sanya Shetty (Khar Gymkhana) were the top performers in their respective boys and girls under-16 events with record-breaking efforts as 13 new records were established on the opening day of the MIG Cricket Club’s   Open Swimmng Gala, held at their swimming pool at Bandra on Saturday.

While Om  set five new marks, wining  golds in the 50m back stroke, 50m breast stroke, 50m free style, 100 m free style 100m and individual medley in the boys under-16 events. Close on the heels of Om was Shwet Poojary, from Police Swimming Pool, who apart from  setting new record in  the won the 50m butterfly stroke, also equaling three marks.

Sanya, the aqua queen from Khar Gymkhana, too was in her element as she bagged three record-breaking golds and equaling one meet mark.Sharing the day’s honours with her was Ruchcika Shetty, of MGMO swimming pool. Ruchika, who  bagged three golds, as she established two new meet record and  equaled one.

Record 530 swimmers for MIG CC Open Swim Gala


A record 530 participants , including  national and state level  swimmers , from 37 affiliated Clubs  from city and suburbs will be in action  in the MIG Cricket Club’s annual 9th Open Swimming Gala to be held on March  30 and 31.  The two-day competition being organized under the auspices of the GMAAA (Greater Mumbai Amateur Aquatic Association), has attracted a huge response in almost all the categories viz. men and  women (both in under-30 and over 30 categories) as well as in boys and girls in different age groups.

Some of the salient features of the Meet are: There are a total of 110 events for age categories ranging from under 6 years to  over 60 years. The  top Six in each of the individual events will be awarded Certificates of Merit, while the top Three  in each event will also be awarded medals. While  glittering trophies will be awarded to the Individual Championship winners and runners up in each of the age groups.


JSF new MCC Pro-40 (Plate) champs


Thanks to Ayush Ameriya’s run-a-ball century (112 off 101b) and his  three wickets haul, hosts JSF (Jwala Sports Foundation) outplayed former champions MCC (Red) by 50 runs to capture the MCC Pro-40 (Plate) trophy , organized by Jwala Sports Foundation at Oval Maidan here.

Put into bat, JSF batters aided  by Ayush’s century, did well to hit up 220 before they were all out in the last of the allotted 40 overs. But the former champions failed to chase the target and ended up with 150 for five as  Ayush Ameriya captured three wicket for 27 runs. His efforts fetched him the man-of-match award.

Other awards winners were:  Man-of-the series: Prabhat Pandey (Black); Best bowler: Dheeraj Paswan. Best all-rounder: Amanat Hussain.

B4S CC emerge MCC Pro-40 champions


B4S (Brain For Sports) CC became the new champions, with a convincing 5-wicket win over MCC (Green) in the final of the MCC Pro-40 (Elite) League final, organized by Jwala Sports Foundation at Oval Maidan here. It was  all rounder Amanat Hussain, who has performed exceedingly well throughout the league phase, again played a major role in the final and was adjudged the player of the series. He grabbed six wickets and scored an unbeaten 31 to play a stellar role in his side’s triumph.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, MCC (Green) batters, put up a poor show with bat in the low-scoring final and were shot out for  126. But for brief resistence from Prajwal Tendolkar (36) and Diyan Kubadia (33),  rest of the batters failed to tackle the guile of Amanat ussain (6/18) and Shil Gaikwad (2/18). The chase for B4S boys proved none too difficult though they lost a couple of wickets before they were home with five wickets in hand.
